About the Site

This site has been designed specifically for kids who play sports, their parents and their coaches. I am a sports writer, and the author of a book titled Mom, Can I Play Football? and have spent almost 50 wonderful years as a youth coach. Using this web site, I would like to share with you some of my experiences while coaching kids and hear about your interesting experiences as a player or coach.

If you have an interesting or humorous anecdote about yourself or one of your players or team mates, please send the information to me via e-mail at jerry (at) coachjerry (dot) com. If your anecdote is selected, I will post it on our bulletin board for all our visitors to read. I will also be compiling the best of these anecdotes for publication in a new book.

You will also find lots of helpful and interesting information about kids' sports on this site including book and video tape reviews, important articles and important or fun web sites you might want to visit. Enjoy!

Do you know of a youngster or a coach who deserves special recognition for something he or she has done? If so, send me an e-mail (again, at jerry (at) coachjerry (dot) com) with the player or coach's name and explain why they are being nominated. Periodically, I will select from nominations received, a "Featured Kid" and a "Featured Coach" and include them on the site. Each winner will receive an autographed copy of Mom, Can I Play Football? while supplies last.

DID YOU KNOW?
Studies have shown that as many as 70 percent of the children who participate in youth sports drop out before age 13. Here are some of the reasons:
 1) players do not get a chance to play
 2) the coaches are abusive
 3) winning is overemphasized
 4) there is excessive repetition that leads to boredom

We need to change this. Let's make kids' sports fun for all the players!

Coaches Code of Conduct
Always remember the top three priorities in youth sports should be:
1) safety  2) fun  3) learning / skill development in that order.
Always
be a positive influence for players, other coaches and parents.
Always praise both teams for their effort.
Always balance criticism with praise.
Always provide each player with the best possible instruction.
Never let your desire to win interfere with any of the three priorities.
Never ridicule a player or an official.
Never dispute an official's decision.
Never use profanity, alcohol or tobacco on the athletic field.
