Skating Backwards

Here is a question from Winter:

I am a new skater. So far, I can go forward and make turns smoothly. But I have no idea how to do back-skating. Could you coach me on this? Or direct me to the website where I can get this information? I appreciate your help.

Answer: Thanks for your question. You said you are a new skater. I assume you mean ice skating.

Explaining to someone how to ice skate is quite difficult in the first place and describing how to skate backwards is even more of a challenge. I skated and played hockey for many years and while I can skate forward and backward it is a struggle for me to tell you how to do it. It is much easier to demonstrate what you should do than to describe how to it. It is not really hard to skate backwards, especially since you have mastered forward skating and turns. I would recommend that you find yourself an instructor to give you a few "hands on" lessons on the ice.

There are a few  web sites you can visit that might help. The first two sites specifically address your question while the third may be of general interest. The sites are:

http://www.cyberus.ca/~karen/recskate/basicSkating.html#2.6
http://www.cs.toronto.edu/~andria/tip/skating/
http://www.laurastamm.com/

Once again though, individual on-ice instruction would be the best way to learn. Good luck and I hope this helps.
