Answer: Most everyone is familiar
with the position of "Manager" in reference to a baseball team.
The baseball manager makes up the line up, provides instruction for the
players, makes substitutions, calls plays, gives signs, argues with the
umpire, etc. But it is unusual to hear the term manager used relative
to youth football. I believe the role of the "manager" in kids'
football refers to an administrative position. Typically, in the United
States, the administrative functions of a youth football team are handled
by a Mom and the term "Team Mom" is used. Sometimes, it is a Dad
that assumes the administrative role, but more often it is a Mom who steps
forward and does the job.
The duties include just about any function
other than coaching/instruction that is necessary to keep the team
operating smoothly and to keep team members and their parents informed.
The team mom usually attends all practices and games and is
available to help the coaches in any way needed.
The team mom is the primary organizer of
all the volunteer parents who perform duties in support of the team during
the games and during practices. She might assemble and activate a
telephone chain or e-mail chain to contact players if practice or games
are cancelled or rescheduled. Depending upon the type of organization, the
team mom might be responsible for preparing and maintaining the team
roster, collecting birth certificates, player physicals and player
certifications. She probably would be the person to communicate
information from the coach to the families regarding special events such
team pictures or the team party. She would also be the person who would
recruit and assign parents for other specialty positions or tasks such as
providing drinks or oranges for half time during games. If needed, she
might also see that parents are assigned to work the chains and down
marker for games or assign a parent to take statistics for the
coach. Very likely the team mom would keep the records showing the
equipment issued to and returned by all the players and would help the
coach distribute and collect the equipment at the beginning and end of the
season.
It is a lot of work running a youth
football team of thirty or so players. Whether the position is called
Manager or Team Mom, it is a very important job. This person is the
coach's right hand man/woman. Without a team mom/manager, the coach would
spend a great deal of time performing a wide range of administrative
duties.
Good luck in your new job. I am sure the
coach will be delighted to have you on the staff and I'm sure you will
have your hands full. It can also be a lot of fun.
